About Rappahannock County

Rappahannock County, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a scenic wonderland of green trees, sparkling rivers, spacious farmland, rolling hills, and mountains. About an hour’s drive from Washington, D.C., the county is a popular destination for weekend visitors seeking relaxation, outdoor activity, fine food, and drink.

The county is home to exceptional artists of every medium—painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, stained glass, metal forging, fine furniture crafting, and more. The annual Fall Art Tour, the first weekend of November, typically boasts more than 100 artists exhibiting in 50 studios and galleries spread among the villages of Rappahannock.

Rappahannock County was the site of the first contemporary winery in Virginia and is now known for fine wines.  It is also home to the internationally recognized The Inn at Little Washington, which is frequented by connoisseurs of fine food from the world over. Whether you prefer casual dining or a six-course meal paired with wine, you can find it here. There are also many remarkable wineries, breweries, and distilleries for tastings and tours, as well as a cidery-meadery.

Drop in for a pint at Hopkin’s Ordinary.

The county is home to an array of B&Bs and inns, each ready to help you relax and enjoy your visit.  Many will also help you arrange activities of your choice. Hiking, biking, touring, shopping, dining, drinking, learning, playing, or relaxing—find your specialty here. Don’t wait another day to Explore Rappahannock!

Rappahannock is in the north-central part of Virginia, a state known for its prominent role in the early history of the nation. It was one of the original thirteen colonies and has provided eight presidents, more than any other state.  It’s also known for its natural beauty with mountains in the east dissolving into rolling hills that flatten out into a sandy coastal plain toward the Atlantic Ocean. Virginia’s popularity as a tourist destination has been enhanced by the long-lasting Virginia Is For Lovers® campaign.  Established in 1969, it has become one of the most well-known slogans in the world. In 2019, Virginia celebrated 50 Years of Love!
