While there were no large-scale military actions in Rappahannock, several dozen skirmishes and many troop movements occurred here. The county was a major thoroughfare and gateway to Shenandoah Valley for both Union and Confederate forces. The Rappahannock Historical Society has produced a detailed map and guide to the 30-plus Virginia Civil War Trails markers and the troop movements and skirmishes. The map and guide are available at the Visitors Center located at 7 Library Rd., Washington, VA, (540-675-3153). The Visitor Center is open seasonally, Friday-Sunday. Map and guides are also available through the Rappahannock Historical Society located at 328 Gay St., Washington, VA (540-675-1163).
