Viticulture and winemaking has existed in this region since the time of the Celt and Illyrian tribes\, long before the Romans introduced winemaking to France\, Spain and Germany. A 2016 DNA study showed that two red grape varietals\, Blaufränkisch and Blauer Portugieser\, originated in Slovenia.
